PRESIDENT'S WELCOME MESSAGE

It gives me great pleasure indeed to invite all of you to the 7th Liver Update, held at the Sunway Resort & Spa from 12 –15 July 2007 in Malaysia. Liver Update is a series of biennial international scientifi c meetings jointly organised by the Ministry of Health, Malaysia and the Malaysian Liver Foundation. Liver Update is a meeting organised for specialists, medical offi cers and allied health professionals to keep them updated on current diagnostic tools and therapeutic strategies including best management practices pertaining to hepatobiliary diseases. As we are well aware, the management of chronic viral hepatitis has progressed tremendously in the past few years with new treatment options based on better understanding of virology and the natural history of the disease. Besides the popular format that we normally use over the years, the 7th Liver Update will provide more interactive sessions in the form of case studies. The Committee hopes to provide delegates with the knowledge, resources and skills to drive the practice of medicine, especially in hepatobiliary disorders to the next level. We hope to achieve this via our well-rounded and invigorating scientifi c programme that has been carefully put together to help you gain new insights into some of the very pressing and real life issues in your own practice.

Topics that will be covered in the Conference include the prevention and treatment of chronic hepatic B and C in 2007, Cholangiocarcinoma, Evidence-based Management of Hepatic Encephalopathy, Emerging Technologies in Clinical Hepatology and HBV Virology. We have also included a special session on the last day for primary care physicians, addressing issues such as HBV vaccination, fatty liver, and discussions on case scenarios commonly encountered in a general practice. A number of world-renowned liver experts have being specially invited to share with us their knowledge and expertise and keep us abreast of viewpoints regarding controversies and challenges in the management of diffi cult liver disorders. This Conference will also provide a forum for colleagues to share their experiences in dealing with complex hepatobiliary diseases.

I hope all of you will have a fruitful and enjoyable meeting.
