Research

The MLF engages in research as part of its work to find answers to the riddles of liver disease. Research activity falls into two broad categories:

Basic Research
This aims to answer questions such as:
  • "Which test is best for detecting viral load in hepatitis?"
  • "Which specific types of hepatitis are most common in Malaysia?"
  • "Does viral genotype have a role in predicting response to treatment in Malaysians?"

    Outcomes Research
This type of research seeks to answer questions such as:
  • "Which treatments achieve the best results in the local population?"
  • "Which approach to treatment is the best value for money?"
    and so on.

Recent Local Research on Hepatitis Includes:
  • A four year review of cases in the east coast of peninsular Malaysia
  • A contribution to a review of chronic hepatitis B infection in Asian countries
  • A study of chronic hepatitis C
  • A study of the frequency of pre-core gene mutations in Malaysians with hepatitis B
